The ‘God of Football’ Diego Maradona vows streaking while Lionel Messi all ready
Diego Maradona is one player that’s on the headlines again, but this time the news is somewhat pretentious. Well more pretentious than his usual standards. The ‘God of Football’ has claimed that he would run naked if he is able to guide the Argentina to the riches of World Cup glory.
The Argentinean team are one of the hot favourites at the FIFA World Cup this summer in South Africa. Ironically they just made it through the qualification in the South American qualification course.
Maradona claimed that he will run along the city’s streets and walk among the famous landmarks of Buenos Aires wearing nothing if he manages to bring back the trophy. In 1986 Maradona claimed the trophy last for Argentina. He told that there would be no limits to his happiness if he manages to quench the 24 year long wait of the fans in search for victory.
He has stated, “If we win the World Cup, I’ll get naked and run around the city’s Obelisk”.
There will be heavy pressure under Maradona’s apprentice; Lionel Messi. The star from Barcelona has shone through out this season, now the time has come to shine for his country. He will be centre-piece of Maradona’s creation as the team goes on in the search for the cup.
Messi wasn’t used in the friendlies for the warm up match against Canada as the Argentineans obliterated them; 5-0. Upon asking Maradonna he stated that he simply didn’t want to risk the ace. He also added that he was trying newcomers and experimenting with some strategies which he didn’t want to be seen if Messi was around.
Jokingly he later added referring to Messi, “If something had happened to you in that match, I’d have been shot - you know where”
That is true, not that he would be shot, but this year the hype created has been immense and already a couple of legends not included in the squad, the burden is stowed on the remaining stars. Examples like Michael Ballack are prime examples of these situations.
Earlier Messi has helped attain the Catalan giants another La Liga title and helping them win the UEFA Champions League in the previous season. Not only that but he has proved to be the match winner in many tough situations. He has been part of the Argentinean Under-20 team, later won the Football World Youth Championship in The Netherlands in June of 2005; with Messi being awarded the Golden Boot and the Golden Player of the championship for scoring 6 goals in 7 appearances and for his outstanding performance.
On his preparation for the World Cup he said, “I don’t feel the pressure. The truth is I’m arriving in good shape.” He also added, “I have a strong desire to do as well as I can, as do my team-mates. We want to give our best for Argentina and we hope things turn out well.”
About his plans for this World Cup he told, “I won’t change. I’ll keep playing in the same way. I hope to be able to do what I do for Barcelona in the national team without my form suffering. I have also won everything individually and now I would like to do the same with Argentina”.
This year’s squad looks promising too. Along with stars like Messi; there is Javier Mascherano, Maxi Rodríguez, Gonzalo Higuaín, Carlos Tevez, Diego Alberto, MilitoDiego Armando Maradona, Kun Agüero, Juan Sebastián Verón. That should give you an idea how much their steam is star studded.
Things do look promising for Argentina this year Maradona should probably get ready for what he has promised.
