The Golden Gate Junior World Cup 2011 – Men’s and Women’s Sabre results
The National University of Physical Education and Sports of Ukraine in Kiev saw the Men’s and Women’s sabre individuals of the Golden Gate Junior Cup 2011 on March 6.
The Tableauz 32 of the Men’s sabre individuals was made up of participants from seven countries, with the most promising belonging to Ukraine, Russia and Italy.
Italian sabreur Riccardo Nuccio managed to qualify for the next as the Russian and Ukrainian Men made dominated the top 16 spots.
Two Russians and the other half from Ukraine make up the top 8, leaving only two positions open for other fencers.
Ukraine’s Olesky Statsenko and Yevgeny Statsenko along with Italy’s Riccardo Nuccio and Russian Trofim Velikiy make up the top 4.
Italy’s Riccardo made it into the top 4 after a grueling match against Russian Efim Gofman with a close score of 15-14.
Both Ukrainians faced each other as Yevgeny defeated Olesky 15-12 and the Italian beat Trofim to qualify.
Riccardo beat Yevgeny with a difference of five points 15-10 to secure the gold for Italy in the final bout. The Ukrainian fencers grabbed the silver with a bronze win by Olesky in the Men’s sabre.
Ten female fencers from Russian, three from Poland, two from the Ukraine and one from Turkey made up the top 16 that participated in the Women’s sabre event.
Five out of the eight seeds were Russian females that dominated the top 8 standings.
To qualify for the semi-finals, Russia’s Alina Meshcheriakova beat her compatriot Dina Galiakbarova 15-14 as two Russian natives Alina Ozolina and Alexandra Shatalova faced off with Alina advancing.
Ukraine’s Lera Chudikova and Maryna Semenko managed to advance to the top 4 with Russia’s Ozolina and Meshcheriakova.
In the semi final round, Meshcheriakova took a single-handed win over Chudikova whereas Semenko and Ozolina had a fearsome battle to reach the finals. There was a tie at 14 each when Ozolina took the winning-hit and advanced into the final bout.
The final of the event was yet again between two Russian natives that was a tight match but soon Ozolina dominated with a two hit difference at the end of the fight with the score at 15-13.
Russia received both gold and silver followed by the two Ukrainians sharing the bronze medal of the event.
It was hard fought battle throughout the tournament as the Russian Women once again showed their dominance in fencing. The Ukrainian Women also showed a decent performance as they managed to climb in the tables and put in a tremendous effort to get a bronze
medal. However, once again it was the Italian Riccardo that had the best showing of the group and managed to secure the gold.
