The Golden Gate Junior World Cup 2011 – Women’s Epee results
The Golden Gate Junior World Cup 2011was held on 5th March in the women’s individual epee discipline at the venue National University of Physical Education and Sports of Ukraine in the city Kiev. Many fencers that made up to the top 16 belonged
to Russia, Ukraine, Italy, Hungary and France. Japan’s talented fencer Kozue Horikawa was also among the top players of the event.
Russian had the largest number of fencers participating, namely Tatiana Gudkova, Maya Guchmazova, Ksenia Kapitanova, Alexandra Magdich and Violetta Kolobova.
The top 8 was evidently dominated by the Russian women epeeists followed by the Hungarian female fencers. These include Russia’s Gudkova, Kapitanova and Kolobova.
Only one from the host country named Anastasia Ivchenko made it up to the top 8, whereas the Italian Junior women completely failed to reach this round. Importantly, the only Japanese fencer, Kozue, was unable to advance into the next round of the women’s
epee competition.
In the later round of the tournament, Hungary managed to snatch the Russian dominance by taking the top two spots out of four by Dorina Budai and Edina Bekefi, whereas the other two were taken up by Russia’s Tatiana and Ukraine’s Anastasia.
Among all these, the toughest face off to reach the top 4 had taken place between Hungary’s Edina and Russia’s very strong contender Violetta. The match was a tie-up at 6-6 when Edina took the winning hit over the Russian female, heading into the top 4 by
score points 7-6.
For the top 2, both Hungarian Dorina and Edina had to hold a face off amongst each other, only one being able to qualify for the final round. Edina again was victorious with a score point difference of 15-12. Tatiana also managed a 15-12 score win over Anastasia
and qualified for the final bout.
The final round was a treat to watch with the game turning on either side every few seconds. However, Tatiana defeated Edina and clinched gold for Russia by leading on the winning hit at the score points 7-6.
The silver medal was awarded to Edina and the bronze medal was shared between the Hungarian female epeeist Dorina and Ukraine’s Anastasia. The event was overall a win for the Russian fencers for taking the top medal home. Whereas the host fencer managed
to hold the not so impressive bronze medal for the women epee Junior world cup.
The following day, another Golden Gate Junior World cup 2011 took place in the discipline of both men’s and women’s sabre individuals on 6th March. It was also conducted at the same venue in Kiev, Ukraine.
The tournament was very exciting as the players battled it out for the top honours. The Russians have a definite advantage due to the large size of their fencing contingent.
