  1. I really don't know what the potential damage to the environment is but every animal has a purpose either to keep the rat or mice population in check or to promote the lower end food chain for other animals to live.

  2. Lets see they are quite tasty if you fry them up

  3. Laura B is absolutely right.  Every time a species becomes extinct, it affects other animals both above and below it on the food chain.  It stops regulating the numbers of whatever it eats and it removes the food supply of whatever eats it.  This could cause other animals to die off too, creating a snowball effect.  In case you've forgotten, we're part of that food chain too.

If you need a more specific example, the recent decline in the bee population in North America is endangering all of the plants that rely on them for pollination.  Almost every animal relies on plants for food either directly or indirectly (meat-eaters eat animals that eat plants or vegetables) so the loss of just one species could have a huge impact on all life on the continent.  Others may not be so obvious, but they could still have a widespread impact in unexpected ways.

  4. Duh. The food chain. In fourth grade my science class did a food web activity. If one species becomes extinct, several other species which rely on it will also become extinct. It's an endless cycle that will lead to our destuction.
