Question:

The Grand National?

I've found out that the Grand National was run at Gatwick for 3 yrs. during WW1, (my partner wanted to know), but now he wants to know why? I'd take a guess that it may have been something to do with the docks? If anyone up in Liverpool or knowledgeable about The National or horse racing can help and inform me, I would be more than grateful. The only good odds I can give at the moment on anything, is that, if he don't stop asking me to find things out, such as this, and then going to sleep when I'm doing my best, I'll give bloody good odds on my putting him in the knackers' yard! Gelded!!!!

  1. Well I'm from Liverpool and also like horse racing but I'm afraid I'm a little hazy on this one.

Liverpool was heavily bombed during WW2 because of the docks however Aintree is well inland and I don't know of and strategic importance.

Having said that bombs were dropped all over the place.

My Nan told me about a near miss in Woolton/Gatacre  which is not too near the docks also.

However wouldn't any bombing have taken place at night?

I'll have to find out now!
