Question:

The Green Monkey....the horse?

Anyone read the artical about The Green Monkey? The 2-year colt sold for $16 Million?

If you haven't, look it up and read it. Apparently this horse was going places, everyone was excited about him being apart of the next kentucky derby, because he could breeze and eighth of a mile in 9.4 seconds. But, since he got spooked one day during training, he has since performed well on the track. They sent him to a few different trainers, but they gave up on him in the first few months! He's at a stud farm in florida now, and people are talking about him being retired, and he's probably only 3-years old by now! How can they just give up on him like that? He's never even participated in a real race before! I don't know if it's just me, but this just makes me sooo mad! That horse probably has so much left in him! They pretty much left him to rot on a farm with nothing to do with his life! Thoughts anybody?

  1. He was never sent to several different trainers, he went to his owner's farm in KY to rehab and no one has given up on him.  According to this article from March http://www.bloodhorse.com/articleindex/a... and this one http://www.courier-journal.com/apps/pbcs... from a few days ago he will be returned to Todd Pletcher's barn over the summer.

  2. They bought this horse on his pedigree and the assumption he would be great on the track. Running an eighth in that time was INSANE!

He will be put out to stud on his pedigree alone, it's a great pedigree but I would be hesitant to breed with him due to his unsoundness!

  3. I had just read that article yesterday on Yahoo Sports and thought it was very interesting. I don't know why it made you upset. The horse turned out to be a dud, plain and simple.

  4. i think the horse will probably be happier standing around on a farm hanging out in a green field eating grass...

i have to wonder whether this horse was completely sound and healthy when sold after running that 10 second eighth mile...  i mean i'd think that they'd do drug tests on him, but it's quite a turn around...  even if he slowed his times a little bit, he'd still be fast enough to beat a lot of other horses...  i mean if you extend that eighth mile to a 1 and a quarter race, he'd finish in 1 minute 40 seconds...  20 seconds faster than Secretariat.  You'd think there would be some wiggle room for this horse to regress.  so i wonder whether they gave him something to force that 10 second run
