So why is the government backing this full swap over to HD television? When exactly is the change and should I be worried?

  1. The government is not forcing HDTV but Digital terrestrial transmissions and the end of analog transmissions.

This is scheduled to take place February 2009 and if you have cable or satellite TV service it will not effect you at all. It only effects the way TV stations will transmit over the air TV, and if you get your TV with an antenna over the air, you will need a digital receiver box to hook up to your old TV so you can watch the new digital transmissions on channel 3/4. It's time for the USA to upgrade TV transmissions from a low definition 60 year old format to a higher definition and more noise free, and modern system. This change over has been in the works for many years and the deadline for it is February 2009.
