Hi! I'm a white, raised-christian guy living in the USA.

If I were to read ONE book about the history of India, starting from prehistoric times and ending in the present, which one would you suggest?

It would need to be in English and available today, and I hope it would not be overly biased towards the Hindu, Buddhist, Muslim, British etc. side. Thanks a lot!

We didn't learn this in school. But I feel that there is a big gap in my knowledge because I don't understand this.

Thanks again!

  2. Android... the indosphere covers most of the indian sub-continent including pakistant, bangladesh, srilanka, nepal, bhutan, tibet and other countries.  An advanced history of india. more to say this book describes about undivided the greater india and it covers almost all south asia.  it describes the past, and the present.  political, history, culture, traditions, and all prevailed and prevailing.

you say that you are hailing from U.S.  and have no chances to know about the south asia, india in particular.  see, we indians are missing roman, greek, and red indian histories and the school history are only from india and some american and english history.

it is the jawaharlal nehru's book  ''Discovery of india'' describes more and swami vivekananda's  book ''india'' will also describes more.

i am much interested to know the world history and some books are available and more and more are not available and very interesting histories are missed and thus as you said it is a very big gap in knowledge.

you asked suggession and i suggest the jawaharlal nehru's  ''discovery of india'' will make you to understand the history of india.

yes, Android if the history is on south asia, it is with hinduism, Bhuddhism, islam and catholics..but, the islam and catholics are arrivals from west and hinduism and bhuddism are only related to this south asian countries. Moguls from Arabias and christians from british established rulings over india..i mean undivided greater india.

i thank you mr Android for sharing some events..histories which are all in my memories...

  3. There is no ONE book on India. If there was something akin to India, it'd be the continent of Europe in itself. But there's different areas you could brush up on. It takes time, but its self-rewarding in the end.
