The Horrendous Sport of Dwarf Tossing
Dwarf tossing is a bar sport that originated in Australia in the 1980s. It is a horrible sport that uses people as a source of entertainment for other people. Basically the sport sees dwarves being tossed onto mattresses and sometime they wear Velcro suits
and are thrown to stick to Velcro coated walls. Over the years various bills and legislations were passed to ban the practice and with the world becoming a much more politically correct place and people finally seeing dwarfs as ordinary people, the sport has
gone into decline. Hopefully these types of very cruel sports will not surface again.
Over time us humans have come up with some very cruel ways to entertain themselves, we have come up with hunting as a sport, cow tipping, ostrich racing and also dwarf or midget tossing. A dwarf is a person who has a medical condition called dwarfism that
causes a person to remain at a smaller height than normal. In the past dwarfs were called midgets but this term is now seen as being offensive and derogatory by many and dwarves prefer the terms dwarf, little people, LP or people of short stature. There is
nothing except height to differentiate people with dwarfism; intelligence and lifespan are on a whole equal when compared to the population at large.
Little people have had a tough time throughout history and are only now starting to be treated as normal. In the past, during P.T. Barnum’s extremely popular freak shows, little people were referred to as midgets and they were treated as freaks. They would
be put on display and shown to be abnormal and weird. Dwarfs were common in the circus as well with many of them being shot out of cannons, picked up and tossed around and generally they were a source of entertainment for the audience. In many popular forms
of entertainment, dwarfs and little people were seen as comic relief and were given demeaning roles to play. Over time people started to treat people of short stature better, but they were still the subject o ridicule and humour.
It was with this mindset that some people in a bar in Australia in the 80s, decided to have some fun with dwarves. They dressed them up and placed mattresses on the floor and started to pick them up and toss them around. Competitions were started to see
who could toss a little person the farthest and a cruel sport was born. People started to put their evil minds to work and they put Velcro on the dwarves and also put Velcro to a wall and threw the little person on the wall to see if they would stick. Different
variations kept appearing with the dwarves sometimes being tossed in mud and sometimes in water.
There were certain legal cases taken to ban dwarf tossing and it is in decline all over the world at the moment. The UN has even taken a ruling on the sport saying that it constitutes a huge disdain for human dignity and should never take place. Even if
someone wants to be thrown around for a laugh, it is still a very hurtful experience and makes it seem like it is ok to toss someone smaller than you around. Many countries had this practice take place in it and there used to even be a championship that happened.
It looks like the sport is in decline everywhere it was once popular and that is a very good sign for the image and dignity of the little people of the world.
Over the years we have found many ways to be cruel to one another, but human and animal rights laws are in place now and they have put an end to many of these practices. A little more action is needed to stop all the cruelty that takes place in the name
of sports but we are slowly getting there. In the future with the sport of dwarf tossing only to be found in history books it will a great step forward for promoting and practicing dignified sports today that everyone can take part in.
