  1. Guerrillas were people organized to fight the government and army of Guatemala. They had a social/Marxist philosophy.

They wanted more social, economic, educational, and medical equality. They also wanted a more pluralistic political system and less power for the ruling class and army. Idealistically, they wanted to be in power.

The catholic church, in the later part of the conflict, was more sympathetic to the guerrillas and the people. More outspoken against the government.

The governments of El Salvador and Honduras were more on the side of the Guatemalan government, while the government of Nicaragua, Sandinistas, were on the side of the guerrillas.

There is more to all of this but this will answer your questions for now.
