The Hunk to extend his 4 race winning streak in the Mr. Prospector
Benjamin W. Perkins Jr. trained 4-year-old colt, The Hunk, will run for his fifth straight win when he takes on the Grade 3, $100,000 Mr. Prospector Stakes' field on 31 December, 2011, to run over a distance of six furlongs over Santa Anita Park’s dirt course against six other 3-year-old and above males.
The New Jersey bred son of Speighstown, out of mare Penniless Heiress by Pentelicus, The Hunk kicked off his career as a 4-year-old and grabbed his first win in his 4th career start.
It was in a starter allowance at Monmouth Park over a distance of six furlongs on 26 August, 2011, and under jockey C Marquez, The Hunk downed Jersey Storm Cat in second and Back Pocket Money in third, while covering the distance in 1 minute and 9.11 seconds.
He then again landed an allowance/optional claimer at the same venue, running the same distance, at a faster pace than the previous one, in 1 minute and 8.78 seconds.
He then posted a hat-trick of allowance races at Monmouth Park, and next, won his 4th in a row at Gulfstream Park at 6 furlongs, over the venue’s dirt track, on 10 December, 2011.
“He’s improved and learned to relax more than when he was there (Gulfstream) last winter and ran in the two allowance races (fourth and fifth),” said Perkins Wednesday morning from New Jersey. “He’s always had tremendous speed, but he was very rank last winter and in his races at Monmouth early this summer. We’d love to have him win a graded stakes that could make him a stud prospect.”
The 4-year-old colt, The Hunk, will face the likes of Capt. Candyman Can in the Mr. Prospector, which will be his career's first stakes' race. Staying at 6 furlongs, The Hunk will have a great chance to assert his authority over more popular and talented figures.
Indiano is in the Mr. Prospector lineup as well, and he made his first two North American starts at Gulfstream Park which makes him familiar with the surface. His best record this year is at Calder race course where he reeled off three straight wins.
