  1. IB is not as hard and scary as everyone says.  Yes, you need to be able to organize your time, and you need to be committed to your work, but it is not like you won't have a life.  I have a job, manage to do my community service, and hang out with friends every weekend, while getting my homework done and getting decent grades.  It's definately not as bad as everyone says it is, just make it through the first year and you'll be fine.

  2. The IB is as hard as you want it to be. If you take the minimum amount of HL's, an easy elective and any other choices you may have for easy options (Bio is easier than chem, etc), then it can be relatively easy and you can do extra curriculars, work and still have little enough homework that you can go to bed at a sane hour. If you load your schedule with HL classes and in other ways try to challenge yourself, while you still can have a life and do other activities or work, you will not get a healthy amount of sleep by any stretch of the imagination. Also, you may find that if you are willing to accept B's instead of A's, the required effort level is much lower. Overall, it is similar to taking about 5 or 6 AP's in terms of difficulty of material, but the pace is much slower because we have 2 years where they only have 1.

I take Maths at the HL, Chem HL, English Language A HL, Spanish Language B SL, History of the Americas HL, physics SL (elective) and, of course, TOK. This is the hardest set of classes my school offers, and I regularly stay up till 1 am doing homework. However, I have friends doing solidly (mixed B's and A's) in an easier set of classes that have only 1hr of homework a night.

You do need to organize you're time well, but you will learn this very quickly. You will have plenty of time to hang out and stuff especially on the weekends. It takes some getting used to, but I actually enjoy the IB, the people in it at my school all understand each other because of what we go through together.
