The IRS says that my stimulus will probably come before 8/15/08. Will it really arrive before then? ?

I just received the note today (I filed late). It says, "You can expect your payment by 8/15/08. If you do not receive it within six weeks of this notice, please contact us..."

Today is the 12th. Can I really expect it in the next couple of days??

The letter lies.  If it is being mailed, it's going out 8/15.  So you should expect it sometime next week.

I got my payment about 2 days after the date they quoted me. So I would say expect it Saturday or next Monday.

Unless they've changed the letter in the last few weeks, that's actually the date it will be MAILED by, so it'll probably be next week when you actually receive it.
