The Imperial Golf Cup Invitational ends on a high note and leaves several NRIs happy
“The event had been just festive” said Capt Sarabjit Sandhu.
The inaugural Chandigarh Golf Club Invitational Imperial Golf Cup initiated on Friday the 24th in Chandigarh with various golfers competing for a place at the top. The guest list was a combination of solid form and steely
resolve which included the likes of golfers Capt Sarabjit Sandhu, Tarlok Mandair and Murad Khan who appeared at the CGC as a guest of golfer IS Mann from Pakistan.
According to latest reports, the Imperial Golf Cup was held to promote golf tourism in the city and welcomed more than 90 Non-Resident Indian golfers to play on the greens.
Sandhu, who is a fifty-seven year old golfer, comes to India every year for a visit and said that since none the of the players had been professionals or even amateurs for that matter, the game had been more of a festive gathering
than a competitive brawl.
The golfer living in Thornhill, Canada said that he has been living abroad for more than two decades and added that when he heard about the event in Chandigarh he felt that he just had to take part in it.
“We were just club golfers, all of us, and I’m actually a pretty keen golfer, so I decided to take part in the event when i heard about it” said the fifty seven year old merchant navy officer.
With the day ending on a few drinks, the sixty nine year old Tarlok Mandair compared the golf in Chandigarh with Portugal and Spain and forecasted that once the international airport is made, the place will turn into an international
golfing frenzy.
Apart from boasting about a golfing event of mere club golfers, the golfer whose actual passion is hockey said that he comes to India every winter and finds Chandigarh to be lovely place to play golf.
A student in UK since 1958, Mandair is currently living in England and summarized the day as highly eventful. The ex-chartered accountant who has been playing golf for more than 30 years now couldn’t help but swank off his neighbours
Dr Farooq Abdullah and two sons-in-law of General Zia-ul-Haq of Pakistan.
As far as golfers from across the border are concerned, Murad Khan stepped into the golf gathering representing Lahore. The forty-two year old golfer is a Pashtun and said that in Pakistan, golf is mostly an elitist sport.
Over the prevailing disturbances in his country the golfer defended his home ground and said that Pakistan isn’t just bombs and fights.
“The conditions in Pakistan is just a hype created by the media, it’s actually quite calm there” said Murad Khan.
The tournament itself ended with Pauline JM Singh standing at the top of the leader board with a total of 40 points while the second place was handed out to HS Chagal with a total of 34 points in the score card tied with SDS Bath.
Bath grabbed 34 points as well and grabbed a second runners-up place after the event.
