The International Cricket Council (ICC) has begged to differ with Sri Lanka Cricket, on the matter of being rated as the best country to have hosted the ICC world cup 2011, after these claims were made by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Nishantha-Ranatunga-c79713, the secretary of Sri Lanka Cricket
in the Sri Lankan media.
Giving ICC’s view point on the matter, the head of media and communication, Collin Gibson said, “All three hosts of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 have been praised for their efforts in staging an excellent World Cup, which was universally regarded as one
of the best in history.”
Gibson further revealed that he failed to identify anyone within the organization who might have said what was quoted by Ranatunga.
Earlier, Ranatunga said, “The ICC has named Sri Lanka as the best host nation following a successful World Cup where a total of twelve matches including one quarterfinal and a semi-final was also worked off in the island.” The tournament was jointly hosted
by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Bangladesh-c747.
Before the tournament, Sri Lanka faced criticism from cricket experts for delaying the rebuilding and construction work of the venues where the matches were scheduled to take place. It was also reported that there were major financial discrepancies in Sri
Lanka Cricket before and during the mega event.
However, all these allegations were rebuffed by SLC, which claimed that such reports were fabricated and had no substance.
Meanwhile, the Sri Lankan cricket team performed exceptionally well in the event, as they reached the final of the tournament under the leadership of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/KC-Sangakkara-c1779.
However, the co-hosts failed to defeat the mighty Indian side in the final, which was played at Wankhede stadium in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mumbai-c820, on April 2, 2011.
After the defeat in the final, Sri Lanka Cricket faced an immediate problem as skipper Kumar Sangakkara and Vice-captain http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Denagamage-Proboth-Mahela-de-Silva-Jayawardene-c53546 tendered their resignations, which were followed by the resignation of the selection committee, led by former batsman
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pinnaduwage-Aravinda-de-Silva-c82298.
The board had to immediately name a new captain for the upcoming tour of England and also needed to sort out the names for the members of the new selection committee.
Later, after the formulation of the selecting body, hard hitting batsman Dilshan Tillakaratne, was named as the skipper of the national team while Sangakkara and Jayawardene were retained in the squad.
