What does the S superimposed over U signify on a standard Bicycle deck Joker playing card?

For instance, in the upper left/lower right corners:

Since 1885, the Bicycle brand has been manufactured by the United States Printing Company, which, in 1894, became the United States Playing Card Company of Cincinnati. The U S stands for the name of the company.
