The July Cup runner up Bated Breath is all set for the Nunthorpe Stakes
Bated Breath's trainer, Roger Charlton, has given out a positive shout for his 4-year-old bay colt ahead of the Group 1 Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes, a five furlong sprint. However, the trainer has shown concern regarding rain at York before the 19th August
race, and hopes there isn’t any issue to ruin the ground for his colt.
The son of Dansili out of Tantina by Distant View, Bated Breath has had 5 starts in the year 2011, and has been fairly successful for his owner K Abdulla.
His first win of the year came at the Haydock on 7 May, 2011, when he narrowly downed his closest foe on the day, Society Rock, by a mere half a length to claim a Conditions Race under jockey Steve Drowne.
He was a prominent runner in the race and edged out his rival’s sight in the final furlong on the left side and was doing enough to go past James Fanshawe trained Society Rock.
The colt’s last race was the Group 1 Darley July Cup at Newmarket, which was a 6 furlong sprint contested by 16 runners.
In the massive field of 16 runners, Bated Breath tracked leaders to begin with under jockey Steve Drowne, ridden to lead over 1 furlong out.
He was tucked back and hung right inside the final furlong, headed well inside the final furlong but he couldn’t top the speed of the leader, Dream Ahead, ridden by Hayley Turner.
Dream Ahead also coming off the pace, cut through opponents and gave his best in the final furlong, readily to win the Darley July Cup.
The Darley July Cup's runner-up then had a bruised foot last week and suffered a slight set back, but trainer Roger Charlton was pleased with the 4-year-old over the weekend.
According to the trainer, Bated Breath is training well for the 19th August Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes and the trainer is hoping that there is no race on the track before the race to give the ground that soft coverage.
