  1. It's been a long time since I read the book; but I would say Jurgis' struggle to make ends meet with the poor living conditions the lower class were given.  He was working 7 days a week, spending no time with family, had to watch multiple family members die from things he may have been able to prevent, he was tricked into thinking he would own his house, I think he also broke his leg? (or something like that) which made it almost impossible to get a job in the stockyards, which was his only option really.  Plus, he and his wife were both working in TERRIBLE conditions just to get a loaf of bread on the table each week.-- and it wasn't just Jurgis' family, it was all of the low class immigrants living in Chicago at the time, Jurgis' family was just used as ONE example so we could feel connected to just one of the struggling families and realize that it was happening to many other familiess just like them.

I don't have the book infront of me now, so I don't have page numbers and exact examples, but that is what I got out of the book.
