The Kansas City Royals defeat the Cleveland Indians 5-4 – MLB Update
Bruce Chen guided the Kansas City Royals to an exciting 5-4 victory against division rival Cleveland Indians on Tuesday night at the Kauffman Stadium in Missouri. The Royals made their way back in the four-game series tying it one all.
Chen, who was making his fourth start, pitched seven innings, allowed two runs on six hits and got five strike-outs to over-power the Indians for the fourth-straight time. The 33-year-old pitcher stretched his personal winning streak, including last season,
to seven games in the last eleven games.
Bruce allowed his first hit in the sixth inning when Orlando Cabrera singled. As Chen tired, the Royals’ manager Ned Yost picked up the phone to relieve him with Blake Wood.
"But the phones went on the blink," said Yost. "So we had no communication to our bullpen."
Chen asking for reliever and ignorant of the problem going on in the bull-pen, kept pitching and the Indians kept hitting. Taking full advantage of the situation, Austin Kearns singled and Lou Marson touched a two-run double trimming the lead to 5-2. Yost
tried many times to communicate with the bull-pen, but all in vain.
Finally, the Royals contacted the Policeman standing near the dug-out to pass their message and he did it with his hand-held gestures. Yost felt relaxed when Wood relieved Chen in the eighth, but suddenly he became perplexed as Carlos Santana scored an RBI
single and shortened the lead to 5-3.
Yost was furious with what happened in the seventh inning and stated. "It was kind of a mess there for a little while but we got it straightened out," He said angrily. "Don't ask me why or how or what, but every once in a while the phones shut off."
In the eight, Kila Ka’aihue, having one loaded-base and no out, surprised everyone in the stadium with a sudden bunt. It happened due to the misunderstanding between Yost and third base coach Eddie Rodriguez, according to Yost.
"Eddie was blocked out and thought I put the bunt sign on and I never put the bunt sign on," said Yost. "That was a miscommunication. Eddie thought I would put the bunt on and I never did. That's not a situation we want Kila bunting in."
In the ninth inning, Yost handed the ball to closer Joakim Soria, who tossed some promising pitches. However, he threw a wild pitch for a walk cutting the lead to 5-4 that got the Indians excited as Michael Brantley was on third and Alex Cabrera was on second.
Soria got a brilliant looking strike-out to end the dramatic game for the Royals.
