The Kinect Show, Ghost Recon: Future Solider – Part 1 – The best and worst of E3 2011

The Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) is marked down as one of the most important dates in any gamer’s calendar and this year’s expo showed exactly why.
With Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo all in attendance, alongside developers and publishers like Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, Capcom, Namco, Gearbox and Bioware, among others, all the usual suspects were in attendance.
E3 has a history of being ‘the’ place where new consoles are revealed, games are previewed and demo-ed, and can easily be likened to a more torturous Christmas Eve of gaming. Largely due to the fact that its like you know what you will be getting, but not
being able to get it: pure torture.
So it is only appropriate that one looks back at one of the best E3s in years and pick the finer of the finest moments that had everyone counting the days till the release date, or in some cases in a state of shock at what they witnessed.
The Kinect Press Conference
I know the reader must be wondering whether the sub-heading has a typo, but anyone who sat through the Microsoft Press Conference will know exactly why the ‘Kinect Press Conference’ makes sense.
Every title had the word Kinect attached to it, every developer and publisher that made his way on to the presentation floor could not stop saying the word, and in the end it seemed everyone at the press conference had replaced punctuation with ‘Kinect’.
It is understandable where Microsoft were coming from, the Kinect was selling like hot cakes and Microsoft wanted to throw its considerable weight behind it. In the end however, it had everyone sick of the word Kinect, though some of the games did look intriguing.
Ghost Recon: Future Soldier, however was not one of them. How someone came up with the concept of opening and closing one’s hand to be used as a trigger for fire an in-game firearm is beyond lame.
In the end, Microsoft overdid it with the Kinect. Even the trailer for Halo 4 was not enough to rid the audience of the sour taste of Kinect from their mouth.
Ghost Recon: Future Solider times four
While Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter stole the show when it debuted as the first eye meltingly realistic modern shooter at E3 a few years ago, the Ghost Recon series seemed to have taken a back seat in the world of Tom Clancy’s video game universe.
Everyone knew about the latest iteration of the Ghost Recon series before the Ubisoft presentation began and everyone thought it was just going to be another standard, run of the mill, live action game demo.
Instead, it was by far one the best looking shooters on show at E3. The demo started off with a single player in a squad of four, supposedly AI controlled teammates, as they executed a synchronized take down of some enemy troops.
Things got a lot more interesting however, when one of the panels lifted to reveal three other people, with controllers in hand, playing the exact same game, in real time.
Four player single campaign co-op, not bad and the fact that it was a surprise made it so much better. Ubisoft took Ghost Recon’s apparently standard demo and turned it into something very, very cool.
