The King Arnold Palmer will return to the course at Quail Hollow Championship – Golf News
The undisputed King of Golf, Arnold Palmer will be returning to the course at the Wells Fargo Championship Pro-Am at the Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina on May 4.
Palmer is currently 81 years old, but his age is of not much consideration in view of his love for the game. Palmer, also nicknamed “The King” remains one of the most celebrated players of the sport and many still regard him as the greatest golfer that has
ever lived.
Palmer will be paired with his grandson Sam Saunders at the Wells Fargo Pro-Am which was known in 2009 and 2010 as the Quail Hollow Championship and is scheduled to start on May 4 of the Professional Golfer’s Association Tour calendar for the year.
The course at Quail Hollow owes much of its brilliance to the King who helped in the modification of some of the holes in 1986. Palmer made his last appearance at the Quail Hollow in 2001 while he was participating in the Champions Tour.
Saunders has been toiling ceaselessly to come out of the shadow of his grandfather which cannot be any easy if the grandfather is none other but Arnold Palmer.
"He is my only coach," Saunders said of his grandfather. "We've been working together really hard for the last few months now and that's been going really well. I think he's enjoyed it. I've enjoyed it and my game has really gotten a lot better since we
started working." Saunders was reported as saying.
Palmer has won seven majors in his career and a staggering 62 times on the PGA Tour. He is also credited of helping to promote the sport on television as one of the mainstream sports. He was among “The Big Three” along with Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus
who helped popularise the sport, increasing the commercial value of golf around the world.
Apart from being a celebrated golfer, Palmer had been an accomplished pilot and has flown for over 50 years. His last flight was on January 31, 2011 when he flew from Palm Springs California to Orlando in his private Cessna Citation X. His pilot’s medical
certificate expired that day and Palmer chose not to renew it for future.
