It is too big a number to have any significance at this time.  At the beginning of every season the number is 162, would that be of any importance to you?

At the beginning of the season, the magic number is 163, not 162.  From that number subtract the number of your team's wins and also subtract the number of the second place teams losses, assuming that you are in first place.  You can use this type of formula even if you are not, though.

26. what u do to figure out is u subtract the number of games ahead the 1st place team is ahead of 2nd place from games left in the regular season plus 1. or just go to mlb.com look at the standings and click elimination number on the top.
