The Legg Mason Tennis Classic 2010- Argentinean, David Nalbandian wins the title
The Argentina’s tennis player, David Nalbandian won the 2010 Legg Mason tennis Classic title after defeating the twenty fifth ranked Marcos Baghdatis in a total of two sets on Sunday. The final match score was 6-2, 7-6 (4). With this victory, Nalbandian has also registered his name as the first player outside the top hundred list, who captured an ATP trophy this year.
“If he continues to play in the similar manner, he can knock down any player in the top ten list”, said Baghdatis about the current form of David.
The title came as the eleventh one for Nalbandian, however the first one on the soil of the United States of America. He hadn’t participated in a championship since April as a result of his hamstring injury. Prior to that, Nalbandian skipped almost a total of ten months beginning in May 2009 due to his hip surgery.
“I was not expecting to straight away win a title after my come back”, Nalbandian said. “I was not sure of my game in the beginning of the championship however, my confidence level started to increase with every passing match of the competition”, Nalbandian said about his game after the match.
Anyhow, with this title, one thing is sure that the 2002 grass court Grand Slam runner up, David Nalbandian is back in action prior to the United States Open tournament in New York.
Baghdatis on the other hand, had few opportunities to come back in the game during the second set of the match however; Nalbandian didn’t allow him to do so.
Nalbandian has so far reached the semi final round of the Grand Slam tournaments on five occasions with the highest career rankings of number three in the world. However, his back to back injuries badly affected his rankings and he dropped down to as low as number one hundred and sixty one in the world.
Nevertheless, the good news is that, the Argentinean tennis ace is once again recovering and therefore looking forward to improve his world rankings as well. The unseeded David played pretty well throughout the week, grabbing a total of twelve sets out of thirteen. Moreover, he also managed to upset a couple of seeded players including the seventh ranked Stanislas Wawrinka, the fourth ranked Marin Cilic as well as the eighth ranked Baghdatis, who was also knocked down by the Swiss tennis master, Roger Federer in the final of the hard court Australian Open championship back in 2006.
When questioned about his current form, Nalbandian said: “I am glad that I am performing pretty well and soon I will improve my rankings if I continue to play like this”.
Backed up by hundreds of fans the Argentina tennis ace, David Nalbandian provided his nation a third Washington trophy in a row. Juan Martin Del Potro previously grabbed the title back in 2008, as well as in 2009, which was followed by his US Open title last year in New York.
Based on Nalbandian’s current form, there is certainly no doubt about the fact that the Argentinean tennis ace, David Nalbandian will prove a major threat at the US Open tournament which is going to start from the 30th of this month at the Flushing Meadows.
“If I manage to carry on my present form, I am sure that I can reach the later stages of the US Open”, Nalbandian said on Sunday after his final victory in Washington.
In the doubles final battle of the 2010 Legg Mason tennis Classic championship, Mark Knowles along with his partner Mardy Fish won the title after thrashing out Radek Stepanek and Tomas Berdych in a total of three sets. The final match score was 4-6, 7-6 (7), 10-7.
