The Loves take the Father/Son Championship
Davis Love III and son Dru Love have won the Father/Son Challenge this Sunday. The pair capped the play on a nervous final hole with the elder Love pitching and son Dru scoring the final putt to victory.
Davis Love III admitted making it a closer win than they would have liked. He did say, however, that it was great to leave the final winning par 5 final hole putt for his freshman son Dru at the Ritz-Carlton Grand lakes.
Dru is something of a golfer in his own right, winning five Georgia state titles in high school.
It was close considering the Nelsons had some great luck in the tournament. Had it not given way and held at the last hole of the back nine, the Loves would have been in tremendous trouble.
The final round score of the Loves team stood at 11-under 61, which could have been better, take a few misfires. The $200,000 prize will be going to the father, Davis, because certain rules dictate against Dru playing for the Crimson Tide’s no.1 team.
Nevertheless, Dru was thrilled by the victory. "I definitely learned a lot this week," he said. "I know this is not quite as big a tournament as the PGA, but you see the way that it's supposed to be done".
As for Larry and Josh Nelson, the tour has had its ups (and a few downs in there too). The back nine went really well, with the duo raking in a string of birdies, which only gave way on the 18th hole.
The 30-foot putts that brought them well within reach of Team Loves and the top prize apparently ran out of gas on the last hole. The elder Nelson described the moment: "I can't wait to get home and see it on replay," the elder Nelson said. "It went in the
hole; I closed my eyes, then I looked up and the ball's over there".
Junior was sure there was a little devil involved. "We thought an angel blew it in on 17; we think a little devil kept it out on 18".
Nevertheless, father and son scored a perfect 60 in the final round. A win here again could have meant three Father/Son trophies.
Larry and elder son Drew had last been around in the Father/Son Championship in 2008 before the event was selected for a bit of downtime.
The other father-son teams to take the field that day were Vijay Singh and son Qass Singh, Mark O’Meara and Shaun O’Meara, David Duval with stepson Nick Karavites and Jack Nicklaus with son Gary Nicklaus.
The Singhs finished at 61; Mark and Shaun O’Meara at 63. The Nicklauses were way back.
