The MSHSAA Class 1 State Golf Championship becomes emotional for the Lady Tigers
The MSHSAA Class 1 State Championship ended on Tuesday with team Villa Duchesne claiming the Cup after scoring a 689. The Rivercut Golf Course placed the Kirksville line-up at the highly emotional sixth place while Southern Boone’s
Payton Schooler claimed the fourth position.
Setting goals when you don’t have the skill and ability is one thing, but having the skill, the goal and the ability and then to eventually end up faltering in the midst is more hurtful.
According to Emily Powell, who is the Lady Tiger’s coach, the Championship had been highly emotional for her and her all-senior squad. The coach said that the team had been unable to achieve their goals which have left them disappointed.
The coach said that the team was this close in achieving their pro-tournament set goals but somehow failed. Powell admitted that although the Lady Tigers have achieved qualification to the state, the hurt nonetheless is
still there.
Team Kirksville, also known as the Lady Tigers, played the two rounds of the tournament after carding scores of 375 and then a fairly low score of 373. The Kirksville squad achieved sixth place at the State Golf Championship and
was led by the top golfer Chelsea Clark who collected a total score of 177. The female golfer thus carded scores of 88 and 89 that placed her on the 16th position.
Morgan Schmitz attained the twenty-eighth position at the State Golf Championship after carding a score of 182 while Jessie Hensley ended at the 48th position. The 182 scorer collected scores of 91 and 91 in the two
rounds as Hensley carded a 194 after a 99 and a 95.
Other than Hensley and Schmitz pushing the team Kirksville up the ladder, Toni Browning and Mariah Smith weren’t far behind either. Browning carded a total score of 156, while Smith recorded a 197. Both of these players collected
a score of 99 in their first round after which Browning carded a 97 to stand at position number 51 and Smith carded a 98 to stand on the 54th.
The Lady Tiger’s coach is nonetheless happy with the team’s performance. She said that the girls played a much better game at the second round and although the course was tough, the girls managed to play a rather good back nine.
Although the coach is a bit disappointed with the team not being able perform to the fullest, she still believes that they have had a good season.
Team Villa Duchesne played the first round to collect a 339 which had been a lot better than the second round of 350. The team thus scored a 689 to grab the victory at The MSHSAA Golf Championship 2010.
