  1. I have used Crank Brothers pedals since the Eggbeater came out and love them all! I have a pair of Mallets for my All-Mountain Bike and use Acids for my more traditional MTB. I think the Acids would be a bit better for you since the plates and platform on the mallets are a bit overkill for what you want to get out of them. The Acids on the other hand would give you the platform you want for grip without looking like you should be dropping off ledges!

BTW, the Acids got a review of 4.33 out of 5 at mtbr.com. here is the link:

  2. I've had two pairs of Mallets and they're very good pedals.  Offhand, I'd say that yes, they'd be great for what you want.  However, it depends on how you're going to ride when you're in regular shoes.  The eggbeater part of the pedal has a tendency to roll sometimes when you're using regular shoes....most of the time it's not a big deal but if you're wanting to pedal flats on rough trails, it can be a pain.   They come with two sets of grip plates, so install the pointy ones if you plan on doing this.

For around town riding, they do fine with regular shoes.  Check around, though, because Shimano has some good models and I believe at least one of them has spd on one side and is genuinely flat on the other side.

I love my Mallets (and my Eggbeaters and my Acids and my Quattros)....Crank Bros is an awesome company with excellent products and service/warranty.  There are lots of pedals out there, though, so look around before you decide.

    Hope this helps!  :o)
