Question:

The Market for Teachers in Southern California?

I'm interested in pursuing a teaching credential so that I can teach elementary school, but a lot of my friends are warning me that it'd be a bad career move, given the horrible market for teachers in Southern California. Is it really that bad?

Right now I've got a job in sales/marketing, which is cool...but I sort of miss working with kids...

  1. Because of the budget problems in California, they are laying off, not hiring, teachers in Southern California.  You might do better if you were in Special Education of in Math/Science, but a general elementary school teacher would be out of luck right now.  Of course, these things can change very quickly, so by the time you graduate, the economy could have turned around again.

  2. I would not do it, with today's kids. Especially with southern california.

  3. If you want to teach in Southern California, you should consider private schools.  Currently, budget restraints are poor for teachers, as many have been laid off, terminated, etc.  Special skills might help, but then you will likely face overcrowded classrooms and limited resources.  Perhaps you can get into a TESL type program working part time and stay in touch with children that way.  Otherwise, stick with your paying job.
