Can someone explain the accurateness of the Mayan Calender.

A lot of times I've read about how accurate it is and so on, but what does that exactly mean?

  1. They used I think it was 3 calendars. Read the link below. In 2012 we will have circled the milky way galaxy. 26600 years. They new the length of this cycle. How? Their 365 day calendar was more accurate then ours.

  2. As no Maya was around in the last 1000 years to control the calendar, most real scientists expect about 4 days possible error in the calendar. Still better as many old calenders in Europe...

  3. Despite claims, the Mayan calendar was not at all accurate.

It was a ritualistic calendar, used for calculating the dates of special lucky days and days for making sacrifices to the gods. As a result, they were not really concerned with exactly how many days there are in a year.

The Mayans used a value of 365 days per year. The quarter day difference between the calendar and the actual year was just ignored, so that the calendar got out of synch with the real year very quickly. This calendar was not as accurate even as the Julian calendar invented during the reign of Julius Caesar and far less accurate than the Gregorian calendar we use now.
