The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) honours players in ceremony

The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) recently distributed honours among players from different teams for their performances in the previous season. The event was held on Thursday, September 8. The teams from Maryland Eastern Shore and Florida A&M Lady
Rattlers settled as preseason favourites in the southern and northern division for a second year in a row, while the Lady Bulldogs and Hornets were also featured on the list. The head volleyball coaches and sports information directors of the conference voted
for preseason volleyball honours.
UMES Hawks
The outside hitter from Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women’s Volleyball Team, Maline Vaitai, was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Volleyball Preseason Player of the Year. Vaitai (Salt Lake City, Utah) was quite successful last season as
she collected a total of 42 blocks, averaged 3.54 kills and 4.04 points per set, which brought her under the spotlight. She emerged as a key player for the Lady Hawks and played an instrumental role in her team’s success several times. She was also named the
MEAC Rookie of the Year in 2010 and also earned several honours during the non-conference play last season.
The UMES squad achieved the 8-2 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference mark a year ago and finished the season with an overall record of 20-12. In addition to Vitai, the Lady Hawks were also supported by senior outside hitter, Zoe Bownen. She was a member of the
2011 MEAC preseason team and led the team with a total of 79 aces and compiled a record of .67 aces per set. Moreover, she averaged 2.97 kills per set and settled for MEAC Player of the Week twice last season.
Lady Bulldogs
Three players on the South Carolina State Lady Bulldogs squad also earned honours. Shabree Roberson, Bria Brimmer, and Desire Waller made the Lady Bulldogs proud in this regard. The South Carolina State Lady Bulldogs are the defending champions of MEAC and
they are working on big plans in the running season as well.
Lady Rattlers
The junior middle-blocker, Pamela Barrera, and sophomore outside hitter, Katherine Huanec, of the Florida A&M Lady Rattlers settled for MEAC honours for their outstanding performance in 2010. The Lady Rattlers had strong presence on the MEAC and posted a
7-1 conference mark with overall record of 12-15. Barrera was honoured for leading her team with a .253 hitting percentage while averaging 2.20 kills per set. On the other hand, Huanec averaged 3.07 kills per set and 3.22 points per game.
Delaware State Hornets
The Libero fromt the Hornets, Sonja Banicevic, also found a place on the list of preseason honourees. She enabled her side to receive 236 points and four first-place points for a second place last season. Hornets earned the status of second best team of
the northern division.
The next Conference play is scheduled to take centre stage on October 2 in Savannah, Georgia, where the Lady Tigers of Savannah State will put up against Lady Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman. Furthermore, the 2011 MEAC Volleyball Championship will get the green
