The Milwaukee Brewers thrash the Chicago Cubs 18–1
The Milwaukee Brewers registered a crushing defeat on the already wounded Chicago Cubs, by 26 hits on Monday. The score line at the end of the game left many critics wondering as to how many more runs were ‘the cubbies’ going to concede in their next match, given their lackluster performance in the last six games.
With an offensive display like this, ‘the Brew’ look to go in with an aggressive mentality for their next match scheduled for today. The current standings on the board suggest another flurry of runs to come when the same teams meet again.
The unfortunate turn of events for the Cubs has translated extensively in their current performance. With the season’s lowest 0.500 in 14 games, the Cubs seem to be lost in the league as the games tend to continue. With another two games to go against the Brewers, all sports analysts are already drawing lines as to who will win the coming games. The team has hit only 17 runs in the last six games, while losing and conceding 62 runs in all.
These statistics do not surprise the average viewer as Chicago has a weak link with its pitchers, given June’s Zambrano incident. Randy Wells’ night was further made difficult as the pitcher faced an annoying task to equal the performance of Gallardo. The difference in runs conceded was immense as the Cubbies’ ace conceded 7 runs in the innings, pushing his average ER to 4.40. Meanwhile, Yovani, Milwaukee’s star pitcher made a stellar performance with a season high 12 strikeouts, while conceding just 1 run in the 6 innings he played.
The main personality to steer the match towards its eventful ending was none other than former Cubs player, Casey McGehee. The infielder burst into action with a homer to deep center and led the tempo for the offensive game that came, following in the 4thinnings. The first home run brought 3 runs to the board as Braun and Fielder ran to the last base in fashion. Things followed with R. Weeks, who converted a pitch to a hit down the center for a double. That eased things for Edmonds and Escobar, who translated their efforts to a run a piece.
The Cubs’ only run came in the 5th innings with Castro making a run from the third base to the last and putting the team 4 points behind their rivals. However, the deficit was not contained as the Brewers extended their lead by a further 5 run hammer with Fielder, McGehee, Edmonds, Escobar and Weeks transmitting their efforts on to the score board, leaving the Cubs with little chance to come or crawl back into the game.
Unfortunately for the Cubs, the Brewers got back into full swing again, in the 6th innings. Escobar smashed the ball towards the shallow center for a single, earning McGehee a run on the other end, boosting the score line with a run advantage to give the team a 10-run advantage.
The action continued with the 7th innings as the Brew’s best batter, P. Fielder singled the ball towards the shallow right, giving Hart and Braun the necessary time and space to make their runs towards the last base. The 8th innings foretold a similar story. Only this time, Fielder whacked the ball towards the right center for a double, converting Week’s, Hart’s Braun’s position into three whole runs. This gave the team a 15-run advantage and brought the tally rate of 16–1.
The final innings brought out the best out of Braun and Fielder as their singles gave Milwaukee two runs with sprints from Counsell and Hart converting their positions to two more runs. This marked the end of the game as things came to a close on 18–1 for Brewers.
With the win, Brewers have come out of a slump they’ve been entrenched in for quite a long while. Fans will hope for a better performance in the upcoming games as the team sits on third in the National League Central Division standings.
As for the Cubs, things don’t seem to get better as the team looks to redeem itself and move towards ousting the Houston Astros’ as an opportunity to claim the fourth position in the table.
