The Most Brutal Matches in WWE history: I Quit
It seems easy at the first glance as only two words are needed to end the match. If a wrestler says “I Quit” then it means that the opponent has won the fight. But the wrestling fans know better as it is almost impossible to make your opponent say the magical words, “I Quit”. Everything is allowed in this kind of match as fighters can use anything and everything as a weapon to make their opponents scream, “I Quit”. Some wrestlers fight till the end and do not utter a word when a referee comes near them with a micro phone but then say “I Quit” when they feel that their life is in danger.
The goal is to take pain and punishment to the very limit where one’s pride does not hold any meaning and a wrestler quits the match himself. It is amazing that an “I Quit” match is not local to WWE traditions. It was Extreme Championship Wrestling where wrestlers first fought an “I Quit” match. This type of contest entered the world of WWE when the legendary Hall of Famer, Bret “The Hit Man” Hart defeated Bob Backlund at Wrestle Mania XI. Bob Backlund was a great wrestler and it was an amazing sight as he uttered “I Quit” and lost the match to Bret “The Hit Man” Hart. The match paved way for more grueling and breathtaking fights of the future.
Even some of the most hardcore legends of WWE said these words when they felt the pain taking their souls away. The great wrestlers like The Rock and Mankind engaged in two “I Quit” matches. The Rock made Mankind say “I Quit” after delivering various chair shots to his skull. The Mankind made The Rock say “I Quit” when Mankind was about to crush Rock with a fork lifter. Both of these great wrestlers had to swallow their pride in order to save their lives and uttered these humiliating words.
“I Quit” matches are not really common in WWE as they drain out the energy of a fighter and put a wrestler’s live at risk. It seemed that John Bradshaw Layfield and John Cena had just taken a blood bath as their “I Quit” match reached its end. Both wrestlers tried every tactic to humiliate and beat each to make the opponent say “I Quit” and lose the fight. It was eventually John Cena who won the match at Judgment day in 2005. John Cena actually lived up to his motto of “Never Give Up” as he never lost an “I Quit” match.
John Cena fought a series of matches against the Animal, Batista at different Pay per Views in 2010. When most matches went wrong and ended in controversy, they finally decided to settle their score at an “I Quit” match at Over the Limit, Pay per View. It was a grueling fight as both wrestlers ripped each other apart in the ring. No one was ready to say the words, “I Quit” and the match dragged on. It seemed for a moment that no one would degrade himself and say the match ending words. These great wrestlers then took the fight outside the ring and banged each other on the security wall and steel steps.
The match was still inconclusive after both wrestlers had delivered their wrestling finishers. John Cena then made history when he delivered the Attitude Adjustment and slammed Batista’s back on the bonnet of a car. The referee came to Batista but Batista refused to say the magical words. John Cena then picked up Batista and threatened to execute the Attitude Adjustment on the concrete floor from a height of almost 10 feet and demanded Batista to utter “I Quit”. The Animal, Batista found the situation life threatening so he swallowed his pride when he said “I Quit” in front of wrestling fans.
