The Most Brutal Matches in WWE history: Tables, Ladders, Chairs
It's hard to imagine the possible destruction when everything a wrestler touches becomes a deadly weapon. This may not be imaginable in a normal wrestling match but it is a reality in a Tables, Ladders and Chairs match. A Tables, Ladders and Chairs match is one of the most destructive matches ever fought in the squared circle of WWE. The limit of wrestlers is not fixed as sometimes two and sometimes even six wrestlers participate in the match. The championship titles hang about 20 feet above the ring floor.
And this is where the hard part comes in, as wrestlers risk it all to retrieve the titles hanging above the ring floor. But retrieving the titles is not easy as wrestlers use tables, ladders and chairs to punish their opponents. They smash each other on steel ladders and chairs to create maximum damage. The hard part also comes when a wrestlers drops his opponent through a table to break the table into multiple pieces.
It was the occasion of Wrestle Mania X when wrestlers fought the first ever ladder match. No one imagined at that time that the normal ladder match would transform in the brutal Tables, Ladder and Chairs match it is today. Tables, Ladders and Chairs matches are for the brave hearted; those who can witness carnage and destruction in and out of the ring.
The first ever Tables, Ladders and Chairs match took place at Summer Slam in August 2000 when three of the most hardcore teams of WWE fought to win the World Tag Team titles. The teams included “Edge & Christian”, The Dudleys and The Hardys. Each of the team specialized in using a specific weapon used in the match. Edge and Christian were masters of Chairs, The Dudleys masters of Tables and The Hardys masters of the Ladders. Edge and Christian retained their Tag Team Championships after going through some extreme pain and punishment.
The second ever Tables, Ladders and Chairs match was fought between the same teams at Wrestle Mania XVII. Many believe that this particular Tables, Ladders and Chairs match was one of the most devastating, destructive and entertaining matches in the history of professional wrestling. The match included some moments which are still remembered by many wrestling fans with great enthusiasm. Jeff Hardy impressed the world when he executed a Swanton Bomb off a 16 feet tall ladder on his opponent lying on a table. Jeff Hardy and his opponent passed out as the table broke into pieces.
Though Jeff Hardy shocked the world with his dangerous and life threatening Swanton Bomb, it was Edge who headlined the match with a notorious spear. Jeff Hardy climbed a ladder to retrieve the titles but one of the Dudleys took the ladder away. Now Jeff Hardy was hanging 20 feet above the ring floor with nothing to support him. Edge climbed another ladder and delivered a spear in mid air. It was a moment to watch as the two wrestlers collided in mid air and then crashed on the ring floor before passing into the world of unconsciousness.
Because the Tables, Ladders and Chairs match involved so much carnage and destruction, that few wrestlers dared to fight with these weapons. The Tables, Ladders and Chairs match headlined the wrestling world again when the dead man, Under Taker and the Rated – R wrestling superstar fought for the World Heavy Weight Championship at One Night Stand. Edge who is perhaps the inventor and master of these kind of matches defeated the dead man after a grueling and breathtaking fight. Under Taker disappeared from the squared circle of WWE for several months after that fight. After all this carnage and destruction it seems as though it would be months or even years before fans witness another, Tables, Ladders and Chairs match in the ring.
