The NFL reveals 100 greatest players list: Jerry Rice number one
We could spend forever arguing about who should be ranked where on the 100 greatest NFL players list. We could have different opinions about Peyton Manning making the 8th spot on the list or Ray Lewis making the 16th but whatever we
do, it would be very difficult to argue that anyone other than Jerry Rice deserves the top spot.
When Jerry played for the San Francisco 49ers he was nicknamed ‘The GOAT.’ Greatest of All Time. He lived and breathed greatness and the NFL has acknowledged it. Rice has been ranked as the best player in NFL’s history. The Fans had a different top 10 list
than the NFL, but Jerry Rice was still on the top and for good reason.
As far as wide receivers go, Jerry Rice has no competition. He was a threat on the field like no other. Think of him as Randy Moss multiplied by 3. Rice was a nightmare to cover. Double coverage was a necessity when Rice was on the field and still he would
pull away with the ball. No matter what the defence tried against Rice, he would beat the coverage. He was faster, his reflexes were amazing and his play was better. In college he was nicknamed ‘World’ because they said there wasn’t a ball in the world he
couldn’t catch.
He didn’t just catch the ball. He ran with it like no one ever could. Without a doubt he was the greatest receiver after catching the ball. The entire defence would chase down Rice and still fail. His ability to slip past not one, or two, or three but as
many defenders as you could throw at him just baffles reason. The number of yards he would cover after the catch was just as amazing as the catch itself.
Rice holds almost every record there is for a wide receiver. He is far ahead of second and third place receivers in the NFL. His skills are unprecedented. Of course Jerry Rice was a talented player all along but what set him apart was his work ethic. You
can’t get 22,895 receiving yards if you are just the best. You would have to be better than the best to accomplish that and Rice was better. He trained himself like no other athlete would. His mind and body were synchronized to play football.
Those who tried to join Rice on his workout routines all came back stunned. They just couldn’t keep up with him. His stamina dwarfed everyone else on the field and his physical fitness enabled him to play the wide receiver position for an amazing 18 pro
football seasons. His stamina also showed on the field. In the two minute offense, Rice shined among football stars like a supernova. After an hour of intense physical exertion, everyone would be slightly worn out, all except Rice.
His physical dominance is complemented by the strength of his will. In tougher situations, his game would actually improve. He never cracked under pressure and always stayed focus. This combination of physical dexterity and mental vitality won him three
Super Bowls in his career and earned him the most valuable player title in one.
There just isn’t enough room here to catalogue all of Jerry Rice’s many accomplishments. He was selected for the Pro Bowl 13 times, and All Pro 11 times in his career. There was no better wide receiver than Rice when he was playing, before he began his NFL
career or ever since he retired. He was named rookie of the year when he started playing football and in 2010 he was inducted into the NFL hall of fame.
Rice’s 22,895 receiving yards stand far ahead of everyone else in the league. In his career he had 1,549 receptions and from them he pulled out 208 touchdowns, the most in history of the NFL. He is the only player in history to have caught 8 touchdowns in
the Super Bowl.
He is ‘The GOAT.’
