  1. There are some standards to genealogy that are important for you to understand.

Everyone with the same last name, will NOT always be related to you. Nor is it true that all names come from one "ancient" place/ origin or even country.  For these reasons.. if you are hoping to find family history, it is not always a good idea to just look for persons with the same name.

Even though genealogy is a hobby.. there are important "rules" to work with, if you want it to be correct. You have to work from the PRESENT back to the past, and you MUST document how you find the information.  Thus, by identifying your parents and siblings, you immediately know they are correct and related to you. Next.. you do the the same for your grandparents.  Each of them have different birth names; and all are equally your ancestry. Confirming their children means that you know these persons to be related. Nothing is ever based on guessing. If you have a common name, this keeps you from wildly trying to find any Smith who *might* be connected. You don't need them.. you need only the ones who lived in a certain place/ time, AND are going to wind up being related.  If I knew an Arter, living next door to me in Dallas, Texas.. and your family comes from Nottingham, England.. obviously, who I know, is useless.

Unless you only want a definition, tracing a surname is extremely overrated and misleading. I understand, it is how most persons think they should  start.. but it does not work.
