Question:

The Netherlands: How much money does a PC Technician make? Also: The social system?

My question is how much money does a PC technician (with basic education) make in the Netherlands?

A truck driver that I know there makes up to 3000 euro a month... . Well, hes making extra hours but I find that a pretty crazy sum of money when I make 1500 netto tops as a beginning PC technician with education.

I'm curious if the social system in the Netherlands is very different from other european countries? As in keep more but pay more, too?

Thanks for any advice you can give me in advance. I'm from Austria but thinking about moving to the flat land at some time in the future.

  1. Well, it might be hard to believe but truck drivers have to go for a long, expensive course before they can drive trucks (I know because a friend of mine was doing it but had to give up because it just got too expensive!). I guess they do it because the pay's not too bad.

I agree it's hard to live on 1500 netto especially if you live in the randstad. I don't mind paying taxes but it annoys me that I have to pay 100 euro a month for health insurance AND 5,1% of my brutto income for the " Inkomensafhankelijke bijdrage voor de zorgverzekering" . Ugh. I don't get anything back- no huurtoeslag, no zorgtoeslag, have no kids etc.

  2. I have no idea what truck drivers in The Netherlands earn, but 3000 euro AFTER taxes seems very high... 3000 before taxes seems a lot more likely... 3000 before taxes in the Netherlands means about 2000 or less after... 1500 after taxes is a basic starting salary, you won't find many people in The Netherlands with a full time job who earn a lot less than that, maybe a little less though.

The Dutch social security system has changed a lot over the last 10 years. Like Mr Enterprise said, better to stay away from it if you can. Yes, the Dutch pay a lot of taxes because supposedly they have a very good social security system but lately I think that's just a lot of bull**** People who are sick or unemployed get barely enough to live on and they have to take a lot of ****. Basic health insurance costs at least 100 euro per month and you do have to pay it yourself from your after taxes pay... If you have a low income you do usually get some of that and also some of your rent back from the government though.

Let us know if you have any more questions please!

  3. as a true PC tech - education is only half.

Expirience and people skills are also very valued.

the 1500 - is that before or after taxes?

If before - then that is really low.

If after, it isn`t too bad - there are worse jobs.

The social system is a bit of a vague part.

I get the feeling no one knows exactly how it works though.

Best not to have to use it.
