The New HP PC's are built with wifi wireless Lan 802.1 b/g/n, how does this work in my house? I have a modem which I connect my PC directly into. I only have 1 computer and no router. I might have to replace my current PC b/c of lots of problems and just saw the new PC's built in with wireless. How does this work? Do I still need to plug in the cable modem into my PC or can it be used like a laptop and use anywhere in my house? I have heard of security problems with people piggybacking internet connections and with this new built in wifi, will it comprimise my connection and allow people to steal my internet connections?

  1. You will have to buy a wireless router if you want to use the wireless your computer has built into it. It supports N so I'd spend the extra money and get a N band router. You'll see extended range, and speed.

  2. You need a wireless router and it'll let you connect both computers to the 'modem' at once.

A new "n" router may get you more range (average person doesn't need it) but WILL NOT make the internet any faster.  The modem is already the slowest thing so the extra-fast one is just a waste of money.

    EDIT:

I should have put in more detail...I re-read your question...

You can just move the wire back and forth if you want...that will work but is inconvienient.

While WiFi that's not set up properly (most people plug it in and don't secure anything) has issues with security and piggybacking if it's not secured propely, when you change the default settings and enable WPA-PSK or WPA-PSK2 encryption with a long passkey it's plenty secure for 99% of the population.

My first wireless router was a cheap Belkin router ($39 at most stores) and comes with a CD that guides you through plugging things in right and setting up security and such.  I don't know if other brands have this or not but I've been very happy with my Belkin and got a second for my parents.

  3. You can use the new pc exactly like your current one - plugging it into your modem  or you can buy a wireless router and use that instead of your modem.   IF you go wireless then you should use a secure system to avoid someone piggybacking on your connection
