The New World’s Number One Amateur: Lydia Ko
Lydia Ko is the world’s number one amateur player. At the age of 15, this is a rare achievement for a player who has managed to impress everyone time and again.
Ko started playing golf at five. She learned the game early and when her family came to New Zealand, she started competing in local events. A couple of wins gave her confidence and she decided to take golf more seriously.
Ko has a brilliant record of wins that is an envy for every amateur player in the world. At this young an age, she has competed in various international events with varying results and success.
While many amateur players dream of going pro after such a record, Ko is content with her status so far. She believes in talking things slowly and mastering her technique before stepping into the professional world.
Many experts said that Ko will follow the footsteps of her role model Lexi Thompson. Thompson went pro after a great amateur career and has started to make a name for her in the pro golf rankings.
Ko, however, is not ready for the move yet. She thinks that she still has to develop her game before setting foot in the pro circuit. Discussing the topic, she said, “I want to turn pro, but I don't think I need to rush things. There’s a lot to learn".
Many experts say that this will be a wise move. Many talented amateurs turn professional eagerly but fail to bear the pressure of a professional tournament. Ko is taking her time and getting accustomed to the environment of pro life before actually entering
it.
Lydia Ko is already a well known name in the golf world. The player from New Zealand is considered to be a well known opponent on the golf course and her skills and mastery of golf means that she generally moves up the leaderboard in the second round.
Ko believes in hard work and practices regularly. She spends at least thirty hours a week, practicing the game and knocking the ball around the course. According to her the key to being the best is to work the hardest.
