The New York Yankees beat the Toronto Blue Jays 5-2 to clinch three-game series 2-1 - MLB Updates
The New York Yankees’ slugger, Mark Teixeira hit a homer to clinch a 5-2 triumph for the club over their division rivals Toronto Blue Jays and grab the three-game series 2-1, at Yankees Stadium on Sunday, May 1.
The Yankees’ slugger, Teixeira, provided a positive start to the club hitting a 377-feet homer in the bottom of the first inning. In the fourth inning, Francisco Cervelli hit an RBI double, then Curtis Granderson launched a huge 374-feet two-run homer and
took the game out of the Jays’ hands.
Granderson gave a cause of pleasure and appreciation to the Yankees’ manager Joe Girardi, who gave full tribute to Granderson in his interview after the game to the reporters.
Girardi said, "It's really his willingness to make a change. The baseball ability has always been there. His willingness to make changes and identifying that he needs to make changes that say a lot about him.”
Curtis’ performance pleased the hitting coach Kevin Long, who spent many hours with Granderson, before the season. Now, Granderson has created some blistering hitting and has a .281 batting average with eight homers and 18 RBIs.
Long expressed his pleasure saying, "It's a satisfying feeling, but Curtis Granderson deserves the credit. He understands his swing and what he needs to do to make it work."
The Yankees’ starter Ivan Nova, after pitching a strong first inning, became way-ward and gave a homer to the Jays’ slugger Adrian Lind in the second inning. He allowed another run, this time through an RBI single by Jose Bautista and endorsed a 2-1 lead
to the Jays. The hitting put Nova under extreme pressure, but he made an excellent come-back and did not give any run in his last three innings.
Overall, Nova pitched six innings, allowed two runs over six hits, walked four and took out five batters for his second win of the Major League Baseball season. The Yankees’ relievers, David Robertson, Boone Logan and Rafael Soriano provided full support
to Nova and did not yield any run in their short spells. The Closer Mariano Rivera pitched one perfect inning for his tenth-save of the season.
The Jays’ starter, Jesse Litsch pitched six innings, allowed five runs on six hits, walked two and got five strike-outs. Despite giving five runs, Litsch made four scoreless innings. He held the Yankees to a single hit until the fourth, but went loose in
the fifth and gave two hits. "I fell behind him and had to come back and after that, he hit a fastball down the middle over the fence," Litsch said. "It was over the middle and he got the best of me."
The reliever Casey Janssen and closer Carlos Villanueva tossed scoreless innings.
