The New York Yankees falter as the Red Sox batter them 8 – 4 (Part 3)
The New York Yankees were visiting the Boston Red Sox at their home ground of Fenway Park. The game was played with 37,453 fans in the stands and the match was a prelude to the visitor’s campaign in the post season. They had the
chance to brace the title but going into the bottom 6th inning, the hosts pressed on the Yankees bullpen. With the home team 7 – 2 up in the game, the Yanks were on the back foot, looking for an opportunity to bloom out of their predicament.
The Yankees were reeling and their luck was not hitting a good rhythm. The damage to their bid for the title did all the damage the Red Sox were trying to levy on the side. The Yankees remained quiet in the top 7th and
that was a sign of confusion for the visitors. Boston didn’t mind taking advantage of the situation and they spread the damage to the bottom 7th.
With a lead of 5 runs on the table and the New York bullpen in tartars, Joba Chamberlain was introduced to handle the damage control duty for his team. Unfortunately, his tasks followed an unsettling setback as Jed Lowrie came
in to blast a 340 feet high homer to the right. The detrimental state of Yankees’ defence had conformed on an apex that was unparalleled at that time.
Most of the Yankees’ fans had lost hope and many were right to think that way given the team’s 6 run deficit in the game. John Lackey was powerful for the Red Sox and his impact on the side was reaching a new favourable high. He
did his best and in the Top 8th, his long run as a dependable pitcher came to an end. The Yankees showed an indication of a comeback in the top 8th and Brett Gardner was the first player to bring those signs of a response to the fold
when he began the inning with a double to the right. Derek Jeter came out, only to strike out while looking. Mark Teixeira grounded out to first but he led Gardner to third base.
The change on the mound followed shortly after Alex Rodriguez was walked to the first base. Manager Terry Francona didn’t waste any time as he brought on Rich Hill as John’s replacement. However, that didn’t change the situation
for the Red Sox as Robinson Cano’s following single to the centre got Brett his run in the inning. New York looked strong with 3 runs on the board but many did not see the winner on the cards on Sunday night as the game went into the bottom 8th.
The bullpen was finally restraining the Red Sox and they did not allow the hosts to score the 9th run. The Yankees took out Boston and went into the top 9th. Their final chance at a title brace was at hand
many supporters were wishing for the unlikely. Jonathan Papelbon was pitching for the Red Sox and the relieve pitcher was doing well, taking out the first two hitters from New York’s line up.
Marcus Thames flied out to the left and Curtis Granderson struck out looking. With two players out, Gardner came in to bat. He quickly got himself to the first when baseman Eric Patterson made an error in the field. Brett moved
on to second when the fielder was caught not paying attention. Derek Jeter was next to come in and he brought in the run with a Runs Batted In (RBI) single. Gardner ran home two bases clear as the home team saw in awe.
However, the push meant nothing at the end as the visitors lost with Alex Rodriguez grounding out to third. The game ended with the Yankees 4 – Boston 8. The result meant the Yankees lost the chance to go top in the American League
East. It was tragic result for the fans that saw the game crumble down for the Yanks.
