Question:

The Next Galactic Year?

Does anyone know when the next galactic year will be? I read about them on Wikipedia and it seems interesting. They only happen once every 220 million years, and I think it would be cool to live during one.

P.S., galactic years are the time measurements used to calculate how long it takes the earth to circle the entire galaxy.

  1. Um... we don't have a calendar for it,as it wouldn't be a great indicator of time passage here on Earth.  But, every 230 million years or so, we make a loop around the galactic center.

  2. I think you might be misunderstanding the term "galactic year". A galactic year is a period of 225 million years during which the solar system completes an orbit of the galaxy, not a single period of 365 days during that time. According to Wikipedia, we are now living in galactic year 20.

  3. Actually the next 220,000,000 year galactic year started last Friday.
