Question:

The Nicotine Patch Warning?

What exactly is supposed to happen or what could possibly happen to you if you smoke while wearing the patch? I'm using the patch to quit smoking (21 milligrams) and I slipped up and had two cigarettes yesterday while wearing it. Is this gonna be the type of thing that happens when you smoke too many cigarettes in a short amount of time-ie; nicotine poisoning which I had when I was younger. I got nauseas and vomitted I think and didn't feel right for a couple of days or is this the type of thing where if I do it, I run the risk of getting some kind of nasty cancer when I'm 40.

  1. It could be nicotine poisoning.  When I have done it though, it was more of a problem with my extremities, like a neuropathy -- losing sensation.  What people are really concerned about is the possibility of a stroke.  It's not a good idea to smoke and continue with the patch, so if you're not committed to stopping smoking, just forego the patch for now.  Chalk it up to a failed attempt and try again some other time.

  2. you've damaged your lungs beyond repair, but you won't really notice for a few years.  talk to your doctor about Chantix.
