  1. The play focuses on the night Thoreau spent in jail for refusing to pay a poll tax that was unjust.  He was exercising "civil disobedience" and making a statement that he refused to obey an unjust law.  Unfortunately for his cause, he only stayed one night because his relatives paid the fine without his knowledge.  As a result, he didn't really make his point to the tax man!
