The Nintendo 3DS continues to sell well in Japan, outselling PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360
The Nintendo 3DS has topped the Platform Weekly Sales Charts in Japan over the past seven days, seeing off competition from Sony’s PlayStation 3 and Microsoft’s Xbox 360, after another impressive week of sales.
Nintendo were in a crisis situation a few weeks back and had to announce a price cut for their 3D enabled handheld portable gaming device, as well as revise their sales forecasts for the quarter. However, it seems that the move has paid off as a large number of 3DSs have exchanged hands.
1. Nintendo 3DS – 53,540 units sold: The 3DS has been in the number one spot for the past few weeks and another seven days of strong sales means that it is continuing that trend. While the number of units sold may have fallen from the previous figure of 58,504 units sold, it is still selling in solid numbers.
Nintendo will be hoping that the trend continues as it focuses on making the 3DS profitable.
2. PlayStation 3 – 29,435 units sold: While Nintendo may be struggling, Sony seem to be doing rather well for themselves as the PlayStation 3 is selling in large numbers. Although, almost twice as many 3DSs were sold in the same time period (the previous week), the fact that the PlayStation 3 is second in sales figures is an impressive feat for a fairly old console.
3. PlayStation Portable – 26,780 units sold: Another source of revenue for Sony is the PlayStation Portable, which almost matched its elder brother, the PlayStation 3, when it came to sales. In fact, the difference between the number units sold of each console was just over 3,000, which, when it comes to console sales figures, is not a large amount.
4. Nintendo Wii – 10,080 units sold: The first console in the current generation of gaming consoles, the Nintendo Wii was an innovation in the way gamers played games. However, the fact that it is still managing to sell more than a number of other consoles is a testament to Nintendo what they are capable of.
5. Nintendo DSi LL (3,944 units sold) and 6. Nintendo DSi (1,718 units sold): Taking up the next two spots are the two iterations of the Nintendo DS, the predecessor to the now best selling Nintendo 3DS, as both portable gaming device saw sales figures which were pretty consistent with their previous week’s sales figures of 4,113 units sold and 1,679 units sold respectively.
7. Microsoft Xbox 360 - 1,346 units sold: It seems that Japan does not fancy the Xbox 360 much as it barely touches the 2,000 mark when it comes to the amount of units it sells in the region. This was another week where none of that changed for the console, as Sony and Nintendo continue to reign supreme in Japan.
