The Nintendo 3DS is outselling the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360
It seems that the industrious people of Japan have preferences which taste on a weekly basis, ranging from which type of sushi is their favourite to which console or gaming platform they absolutely must own!
The reason for that analogy is the fact that the Nintendo 3DS is back at the top of the platform sales charts following a week where it fell it’s full on console rival, Sony’s PlayStation 3.
However, the handheld gaming device managed to increase its sales to 58,837 units from previous week’s 49,076 units sold and knocked the competition off its perch.
Things are always different when you delve deeper into them and the reason for the 3DS’ rise was not because the portable gaming device saw a massive surge in sales, but rather because the PlayStation 3’s sales fell drastically.
The previous week Sony’s console sold a staggering 64,786 units, a figure which propelled it into the top spot, however, the hype seems to have cooled down as it now only managed to sell less than half of that. At 36,061 units sold, one can understand why
the 3DS retook the top spot in Japan, especially if one compares it to the sales figures for Sony’s console in the previous week.
The PlayStation Portable was also selling consistently as it stayed in the 25,000 unit region. Selling slightly lesser units than the previous week, which stood at 25,391 units sold, the PSP managed to shift 25,122 units in the previous week to come in at
number 3.
Japanese people know how to have a good time and they seem to be finding a means to do that with the Nintendo Wii, which managed to sell more than 4,000 units from its previous week’s figure of 10,743 units sold. The current figure stands at 15,406 units
sold.
The Nintendo DSi is selling well as it comes in at number 4 and number 5, respectively. The two models of the DSi, the DSi LL and the DSi, both managed to sell upwards of 2,000 units each. The figures look promising and there is hope for Nintendo, as one
can expect the figures to rise in the coming Holiday Season.
In what is almost a slap to the face to Microsoft, an outdated, almost a decade old console, the PlayStation 2, is outselling the Xbox 360 for the second week running. The PlayStation 2 sold 1,317 units and the Xbox 360 managed to move just 1,295 units.
It seems that Japan just cannot seem to develop a taste for the Xbox 360, no matter how hard it tries.
The Nintendo DS Lite and the Sony PlayStation Portable Go also stayed in the charts, but with a combined total of 85 units sold, a mention is all they deserve.
