Nominees for 2010 Poker Hall of Fame named
Harrah’s, owners of the World Series of Poker, have announced the 2010 candidates for enshrinement in the Poker Hall of Fame. Of the 10 nominees a maximum of two will enter the Hall of
Fame. The induction ceremony for the player(s) selected will take place in November as the WSOP Championship comes to a close.
An open vote was conducted between 1 July and 31 August, where the public could vote for the players they thought should be named to the ballot. Some 102 names were suggested during this
time, with 44 of these names receiving multiple votes. The top 10 vote getters in the public vote were, Chris Ferguson, Barry Greenstein, Jennifer Harman, Dan Harrington, Phil Ivey, Linda Johnson, Tom McEvoy, Daniel Negreanu, Scotty Nguyen, and Erik Seidel.
The Poker Hall of Fame Governing Council will finalize the selections using the following criteria, “A player must have played poker against acknowledged top competition, played for high
stakes; played consistently well, gaining the respect of peers; stood the test of time; or, for non-players, contributed to the overall growth and success of the game of poker, with indelible positive and lasting results.”
Once the list is finalized ballots will then be sent to the 16 living Hall of Fame members as well as a 17-person media panel. This group of 33 will then vote for their selections, and
the top two vote getters, as long as they receive a majority of the vote, will join the Hall of Fame. In 2009 only Mike Sexton was inducted, becoming the 38th member of the Hall of Fame.
Benny Binion, owner of the Horseshoe Casino in Las Vegas, established the Poker Hall of Fame in 1979. In 2004 Harrah’s purchased Binion’s Horseshoe and the World Series of Poker brand,
the Hall of Fame was part of that purchase.
