The OLYMPIC BAR on my WEIGHT SET has RUST... how do I get rid of it?

I bought my very first weight set about 5 months ago.

There is a lot of rust collecting on the bar.

I am thinking I need some chemical to remove it and some other chemical to coat it to keep it from comming back again.

What do you recommend and can you give detailed instructions on how to carry out this project?

  1. use vinegar to remove the rust and not sure what you can use to protect it but Vaseline is one suggestion it may be that you will need to apply it when not in use and clean it off before using it rust requires two things air and water remove one and you have cracked

  2. Buy some of that spray paint that chemically bonds the rust to the metal. I think it is called Rust-X.  What the specific application details are would be best found on the instructions included with the product. But, in general, a light wire brushing and dusting are all that is needed for surface prep. The product is claimed to actually stop rust in it's tracks.  Works great on rusty cars! I suppose it would do a great job on your bar, too.

  3. Use some fine steel wool. Rub the rust off and then wipe clean. After the rust has been removed a coating of furniture wax (pledge) will keep the salty sweat from causing more rust
