Some fish need salt to live, but too much salt can kill them. Water is evaporated, and salt left behind, so the water would become more "salty". But wouldn't it end up "backing up" when there is no evaporation (there will always be evapo due to sun etc etc) . The ice means less and more salt depending on where etc etc. But where does the salt come from? I guess its like the chicken question. But are their salt deposits under the sae? but what about the fish?

  1. The salt comes from the runoff from the continents.  When it rains it pushes sediment (including salt) into rivers and then carried into the ocean.

  2. The vast expanse of water in the sea that covers most of the space on earth is salty. This is because most of the rivers and streams empty themselves into it.The rivers are strewn with rock and plant debris.

The rocks contain many minerals and salts(especially sodium chloride) which dissolve in the water. As the rivers drain into the sea a considerable amount of salt gets dissolved in the sea water.

When these waters evaporate due to the heat of the sun, they leave the salt behind. The evaporated water is brought back to the land in the form of rain and the rivers carry the water again to the sea.

As this cycle is repeated, the amount of salt in the sea increases but the water content does not.
