The Odyssey..........?

In The Odyssey, how do the land and the sea differ, what does each represent, and how does their contrast contribute to the meaning of the work as a whole?

The land is safer than the sea for Odysseus because of Posiden.

The land is constant temptation for Odysseus. He's a man on a mission to return home, but whenever he puts ashore he's tempted by witches, women, drugs, and food. It would be far easier for Odysseus to simply give up his quest to return home to his wife and son, but he always returns to the ocean and continues his dangerous journey, defying the gods themselves to make it back to his family.
