The Old Firm kept apart
Rangers and Celtic were kept apart in the quarter finals of the Co-Operative Insurance Cup. The two sides will be happy to have avoided each other after they both had easy wins in the last round.
Celtic progressed at home to Inverness Caledonian Thistle after thrashing the visitors 6-0. Rangers were just as impressive in their home fixture, which they won 7-2 against Dunfermline.
Both Old Firm teams have tricky matches and face Scottish Premier League opposition in the next round. Rangers will travel to Ruby Park to meet Kilmarnock while Celtic will face St Johnstone at McDiarmuid Park.
Despite playing away from home, the two sides will believe that they should advance to the next round of the competition and both managers will feel that they should reach the final providing they avoid each other in the semi finals.
Kilmarnock goalkeeper Alan Combe was interviewed after the draw and said, “We would liked to have stayed away from the Old Firm, but we would have to play them at some point. You don’t get any bigger than Rangers but we are at home. The boys are full of
confidence at this moment in time and Rangers have had a great start to the season, so its got the makings of a good game.”
St Johnstone midfielder Liam Craig was exicited by the prospect of playing Celtic. “It was nice to get the home draw and we look forward to it, but obviously getting Celtic you know it’s going to be difficult.”
The ties are due to be played on the 26th and the 27th of October and both Old Firm sides will expect to be involved in tougher matches this time around. In the other quarter final games, Motherwell will take on Dundee United while
the only non Premier League side left in the competition Falkirk will visit Aberdeen.
