The Open Championship 2012 returns to Lytham
Once again the time is here for the British Open Championship. At the 141st Open, the best players of the game from all over the world are going to fight it out for the Claret Jug.
The event starts from the 19th of July and the four day event ends on the 22nd of July. This year the venue of this prestigious event is Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club in Lancashire, England.
The venue for the Open has a great history. The club was founded in 1886. Over the years, many great players have performed here and have picked many trophies. This is going to be the 11th Open hosted at the venue.
The first Championship Open played here was in the year 1926. Back then, it was won by an American, Bobby Jones. Then next time the Open was played at this venue was in the year 1952 and it was won by South African Bobby Locke.
The next two Opens at this venue were won by two Australians Peter Thomson and Bob Charles in the year 1958 and 1963, respectively. In 1969 the Claret Jug was bagged by Tony Jacklin and in the year 1974 it was won by another South African Gary Player.
The next two Opens hosted at Lytham were won by Seve Ballesteros. In the year 1996 the Claret Jug was bagged by another American Tom Lehman.
The last Championship Open at the Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club was won by David Duval. This year he will be looking to win it again. Duval is certainly going to be under the spotlight in this year’s Open.
“When you have worked so hard and had so many near misses and then win when you didn’t play that well it’s like, ‘Are you kidding me? Are you really gonna do this to me?” said Duval.
“It’s not like I played badly at Lytham in 2001; but out of all the tournaments I won that’s the one I played the worst in”.
Other players who are going to be under the spotlight and the players fans are waiting for are Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy.
